Background of the Study

Pain is one of the most debilitating symptoms experienced by cancer patients, often resulting from the cancer itself or its treatment (Bello & Musa, 2024). Effective pain management is critical in oncology nursing, as inadequate control of pain can severely impact a patient’s quality of life, hinder recovery, and increase psychological distress (Adepoju et al., 2024). Oncology nurses are pivotal in pain assessment and the implementation of pain management strategies, which may involve pharmacological methods, physical therapy, and psychological support (Oladele & Yusuf, 2024).

In Bauchi State, cancer care services are provided at Bauchi State Specialist Hospital, where oncology nurses are tasked with managing the pain of cancer patients. However, challenges such as limited access to opioids, insufficient training in pain management, and varying patient responses to pain treatment complicate the effectiveness of pain management strategies (Ibrahim & Hassan, 2024). This study aims to investigate the pain management strategies used by oncology nurses at Bauchi State Specialist Hospital, focusing on the methods, challenges, and outcomes of pain relief interventions.

Statement of the Problem

Cancer-related pain is often under-reported and inadequately managed, especially in regions with limited healthcare resources (WHO, 2024). In Bauchi State, oncology nurses may lack sufficient training and resources to effectively manage pain in cancer patients, resulting in poor pain relief outcomes and decreased patient satisfaction (Muhammad et al., 2024). The lack of a standardized approach to pain management further complicates the situation. This study seeks to evaluate the pain management strategies used by oncology nurses and identify barriers to providing optimal care in Bauchi State Specialist Hospital.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the pain management strategies employed by oncology nurses in Bauchi State Specialist Hospital.
  2. To assess the challenges faced by oncology nurses in managing cancer-related pain.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of current pain management strategies in improving patient outcomes.

Research Questions

  1. What pain management strategies do oncology nurses use in Bauchi State Specialist Hospital?
  2. What challenges do oncology nurses face in managing cancer-related pain?
  3. How effective are the current pain management strategies in improving cancer patients' pain relief outcomes?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Oncology nurses in Bauchi State Specialist Hospital use a variety of strategies to manage cancer-related pain.
  2. Lack of training and limited access to medications are significant challenges in managing cancer-related pain.
  3. The implementation of effective pain management strategies leads to better patient outcomes in Bauchi State Specialist Hospital.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on oncology nurses and their pain management strategies in Bauchi State Specialist Hospital. Limitations include potential biases in nurse self-reporting and challenges in measuring pain management effectiveness objectively.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pain Management Strategies: Techniques and interventions used to alleviate pain in cancer patients, including medications, physical therapies, and psychological support.
  • Oncology Nursing: Specialized nursing care focused on patients with cancer, including symptom management and treatment support.
