Pain is one of the most debilitating symptoms experienced by cancer patients, often resulting from the cancer itself or its treatment (Bello & Musa, 2024). Effective pain management is critical in oncology nursing, as inadequate control of pain can severely impact a patient’s quality of life, hinder recovery, and increase psychological distress (Adepoju et al., 2024). Oncology nurses are pivotal in pain assessment and the implementation of pain management strategies, which may involve pharmacological methods, physical therapy, and psychological support (Oladele & Yusuf, 2024).
In Bauchi State, cancer care services are provided at Bauchi State Specialist Hospital, where oncology nurses are tasked with managing the pain of cancer patients. However, challenges such as limited access to opioids, insufficient training in pain management, and varying patient responses to pain treatment complicate the effectiveness of pain management strategies (Ibrahim & Hassan, 2024). This study aims to investigate the pain management strategies used by oncology nurses at Bauchi State Specialist Hospital, focusing on the methods, challenges, and outcomes of pain relief interventions.
Cancer-related pain is often under-reported and inadequately managed, especially in regions with limited healthcare resources (WHO, 2024). In Bauchi State, oncology nurses may lack sufficient training and resources to effectively manage pain in cancer patients, resulting in poor pain relief outcomes and decreased patient satisfaction (Muhammad et al., 2024). The lack of a standardized approach to pain management further complicates the situation. This study seeks to evaluate the pain management strategies used by oncology nurses and identify barriers to providing optimal care in Bauchi State Specialist Hospital.
The study will focus on oncology nurses and their pain management strategies in Bauchi State Specialist Hospital. Limitations include potential biases in nurse self-reporting and challenges in measuring pain management effectiveness objectively.
